On one of my favorite artist's retreats, I rented a bike on the island of Nantucket. I rode all around the island over the course of two days, taking pictures and making sketches.
I did have to hire a driver to take me out to this destination I chose, though. Wauwinet is located in the upper northeast corner of Nantucket, overlooking Head of the Harbor. From this vantage point, you can see the harbor and the 'arm' of land exending and wrapping around it. The textured meadow grasses almost glowed under a light grey-blue sky. I looked to Gauguin for inspiration as I layered brushwork to achieve a sense of place.
Fun fact. Long ago, sailors on Nantucket nicknamed the island "The Grey Lady" for a reason... fog comes and goes quickly here. I got to experience the fast-changing weather variations on this retreat, from pure sunshine to fog, to wind, to a deluge of rain.
