This painting is inspired by Chapin Memorial Beach in Dennis, a town on Cape Cod's bay side. The tide ebbs and flows very quickly here, creating bumps in the sand that are left behind at low tide by the sculpting force of the water. It was an exciting labor of love to paint all the colors in the pools of water in each rivulet of wet sand.
I worked on this as I listened to National Public Radio reporting on the buildup and breakout of war on the people and land of Ukraine. The title, "A Time For Peace," is what I wish for our world at this time. This phrase is taken from the famous passage in Ecclesiastes (a time for war, a time for peace). A famous song written by Pete Seeger, performed by the Byrds, also references this passage ("Turn! Turn! Turn!" 1965). As the tide illustrates the themes of time and balance in nature, the passage and song reflect these themes in the human experience.
