Moshup Beach (formerly called Gay Head)
Martha’s Vineyard
Aquinnah, Massachusetts

Currently on view at Cape Cod Museum of Art, this painting was selected for the juried exhibit Transparent, Translucent, Opaque: Layered Meanings. It is now shown in the Collectors' Corridor and is available for purchase through the museum or here on this website.

As I described in “Stories of the Ancients,” the clay cliffs of Aquinnah have captured my imagination. This place is so different from other coastal areas of New England, you almost can’t believe you’re in Massachusetts when you walk on Moshup Beach. Prehistoric glaciers shaped these cliffs, which erode with continual exposure to the elements. But like the dunes of Provincetown, even with the undeniable climate and human change affecting the natural coastline, there is inherent, undeniable beauty and mystery here. We can appreciate this in the fleeting time we have with them. The layers of reds, pinks, ochres, whites, peaches, blacks, and gray colors are all there in the clay. In this piece, I play off the coolness of the turquoise water, also notable at this beach, against the warm earth tones of the clay and sand.

This original painting was part of COLORS OF THE COASTLINE at The StoveFactory Gallery. Giclée prints are available, please inquire.
