Works included in show
The paintings in this show represent works made from retreats I have taken in the past three years to iconic Massachusetts locations: Nantucket, Cape Ann (Plum Island and Halibut Point State Park), and Cape Cod National Seashore.
I drive and hike many miles to find certain places of beauty I am looking for - and I also keep a posture of being ready for surprises, when I feel God may be steering me. Drawing, sketching, journaling, and taking pictures on site all culminate towards the process of finally painting in the studio. The natural landscape never ceases to inspire and challenge me.
Since January of 2017, my invaluable art patrons have ensured that I get to these locations to paint. To read more about that story, click here.
Conveying "a sense of place" is my goal. There is always a high bar for artists who paint iconic and famous locations. My approach to painting is less about recording what is seen with the eyes, and more about transcending to an awareness of the peace and beauty in the spirit of the place.
I hope that you can come enjoy the show in person! Screen images are just not the same. To make an appointment, email Judith Belt-Smith. If a visit is not possible, please look here for the paintings that are on view and available for purchase.
