As a native of New England, I have deep archives in my mind of the beauty of the Northeast in all seasons. From Popham Beach, Maine to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the time I have spent in recreation, by bodies of water specifically, has been an inspiration I draw from as an artist.
My journey as an artist began at a young age within a creative family. Visits to art museums and enrollment in art classes were opportunities my parents provided. A formative moment for me as a child was the evening when I attended an art opening for the first time with my parents and grandparents who were friends with a faculty artist at a private school in New Hampshire. Gorgeous hand-pulled prints hung on the walls and my admiration and respect for this artist was won. As I watched the artist greet his guests, I was suddenly in touch with a tangible possibility – could I too do this one day? The answer in my spirit was “yes,” and as a child I made the decision to follow that calling.
A rigorous university education with a focus on academic training in fine arts equipped me for work in Boston's competitive market. I worked as a freelance illustrator and as an assistant decorative painter to the interior design trade. In my late 20’s, I ventured out into my own decorative painting business. Along with several features in press media, including a spot on the Boston TV news magazine Chronicle, I enjoyed some very gratifying projects and partnerships. Yet there was something missing.
I rediscovered painting on canvas, my first love, returning as a passion to embrace seriously. I found my own ‘voice’ as a painter. I developed more deeply as an artist and as a person on a spiritual path. The building blocks of an education and challenging work in the earlier times helped construct a solid place from which to grow.
Art has taken me on many adventures: meeting wonderful people, traveling to beautiful locations, learning from teachers, and seeing masters’ works in the world's best museums. Best of all is the act of painting in and of itself. Each painting teaches me more.
Currently I am working on a series entitled Water’s Edge, which explores shorelines in different seasons and locations along the East Coast of the US. I love to meet people and to share what I do with others.
